New Patients

Do I need a Dr’s referral
As a new patient you don’t need a referral to have physiotherapy.  If you are accessing physiotherapy on the DVA, Workcover, Chronic disease management plan or third party insurance claim you will need your GP to complete the appropriate paperwork and bring it along with you to your initial appointment.
What do I wear to my physiotherapy session

Depending on what area needs treatment will depend on what clothing is required.  If you are having your neck or shoulder treated the area needs to be easily accessible.  Either a thin strapped singlet or bra (for ladies) is appropriate.  For lower limb treatment a loose fitting pair of shorts.  If your lower back is being treated it may be necessary for you to take your pants or skirt off so again a loose fitting pair of shorts is useful.

What should I bring with me

As a new patient please bring any paperwork that may have been provided to you such as referral letter, discharge letter or post operative rehabilitation schedule from your GP, Consultant or other Allied Health Professional.  If you have had any recent X-rays or scans please bring those along too. If you are claiming under DVA please bring your card with you.  If you have private health cover please bring your membership card and we can swipe it through the HICAPS machine so you only need to pay the gap fee.

How long is my consultation

The initial consultation is approx. 45 minutes and consists of some questions to determine the problem area, a physical assessment to assist with diagnosing the problem and a treatment.  A follow up session takes approx. 30 minutes and predominantly consists of treatment with a short questioning and physical assessment to see how your condition is progressing.  If you are having 2 or more areas treated an extended consultation of 45 minutes will be given to allow enough time to treat each area thoroughly.

Do you have HICAPS

Yes we do have HICAPS, make sure that you bring your private health fund card with you so  you only need to pay the gap fee.  We take Eftpos, Mastercard, Visa, American Express or cash as payment.

How many treatment sessions do I need

This will vary dependent on your condition however most people require 2-6 treatment sessions.  Some post operative conditions such as a knee reconstruction will require considerably more.  You may initially be requested to attend a couple of times in the first week or two.

Does Medicare cover the cost of my treatment

No, unfortunately Medicare does not cover physiotherapy.  However if your GP feels your condition qualifies under the Chronic disease management plan you may be eligible to access up to 5 physiotherapy sessions within a 12 month period for a chronic condition that has been present for more than 6 months.  This can only be accessed with a referral from your GP.  Back2Balance Physiotherapy does not bulk bill for this service. You will be expected to pay the full fee for your consultation however if you bring along your Medicare card and a bank card with a Savings account attached the rebate of $54.60 can be provided on the spot.  If you feel you are eligible to access physiotherapy through this scheme please discuss with your GP.

I’m on Workcover do I pay for my treatment

No you do not need to pay for your physiotherapy sessions as long as your GP has signed a current medical certificate certifying that you were injured at work and require physiotherapy.  As a new patient you need to bring this along with a claim number if it has already been provided.  If your claim is rejected by Workcover you will be liable to cover the cost of any treatment you have received.

I’m a DVA patient do I need to pay

On your first visit you must bring with you the appropriate DVA referral which has been completed by your GP. You will not be required  to pay for your session we can claim it electronically directly through DVA.   If you require any products eg. Exercise bands, braces or strapping this may also be covered dependent on the cost of the product.

Do I have to pay on the day

Yes, payment is required following each treatment session.  If you have any problems with this please speak to Lyndsey.

Will I be provided with a home program

Yes, almost all patients will be given something to do at home.  This may be a simple stretching, heat or icing program, or it could be a complex core stability program.  Each patient is assessed individually and will be provided with home work that is necessary to aid their recovery.  Your time constraints will be taken into account, therefore if you have very little time to put into a home program you will not be given a program that will take half an hour to do 3 times a day.  It is very important that you complete the exercises given at home as this will speed up your recovery.
